Encounters

Encounters

Life is full of encounters. Some are welcome, some not. In this collection of images various characters come into contact with others in a variety of spaces on land and sea. Some happily meet with friendship, others with enmity. All of the images come from a whimsical place that reflects the myriad aspects of the human condition.

Etudes

Etudes

Made during the pandemic, these images are studies that utilize the techniques I learned while sheltering in place from two very gifted artists, Maggie Taylor and Michael Brunsfeld. The collection has no underlying theme to connect the images. Each is a practice lesson or a study.

A Second Childhood

A Second Childhood

When the pandemic required us to shelter in place, I, at first, was elated. I felt like a kid who’d been sent to her room and, once there, had endless hours to play, which I did. It was like a Second Childhood. Thus, the images I made during this period feature dolls and toys. As time went on, though, the world around us went insane and my elation became sorrow.

Betsy's Peculiar People

Betsy's Peculiar People

When my friend Betsy died, her friends, and there were 9 of us now, had to clean up after her. We came across a “piece of art” she’d made and left in an upstairs bathtub. It was a sculpture of these peculiar people. This collection grew out of my mourning for my friend. Each tells the viewer something about Betsy’s spirit and character. Thank you, Betsy.

Child’s Play in the Time of Trump

In January of 2016, a grim reality set in with the turnover of the government to Donald Trump. All of the characters in this collection have doll’s heads. Strangely, the final image in the collection turns out to be a premonition of what came to pass on January 6, 2021.

The Silver Lining

The Silver Lining

Silver Lining is a collection of images featuring animals dressed in vintage garb, going about the business of life. Vintage pictures of my ancestors and others from flea markets provided the bodies of the characters. The narratives echo memories from my years of stellar education. They are filled with whimsy and joy and are meant to delight. SEE BOOK!

Transplants

An early collection in which I was learning to transplant people into new places via layers in Photoshop. Other than the Pitcock Mansion in Portland Oregon and Bodie, California, all of the environments are from the Bay Area. The people are from paintings at various museums.
